Ask ArtFacts Part I

Dear Reader,

As ArtFacts celebrates its 15th birthday, we want to give back to our subscribers with something we like to call “Ask ArtFacts”, using Top Data.

Top Data is a new feature we’ve tested and rolled out for those in the research field of the fine art community. It’s a tailor-made tool that, given your parameters, provides ultra-specific statistics for comparison. Whether it’s an inquiry into the past or a detailed look into the future, ArtFacts takes the guesswork out of the equation and puts the answers at your fingertips by utilizing the extensive intelligence in ArtFacts.Net’s archives and rankings.

To give you an idea of what Top Data can do, we compared the environments of Berlin and London to see when Berlin became a significant competitor with London’s art scene. In 1990, London was exploding, with first-time exhibiting artists having nearly three times as much success as their contemporaries in Berlin. But Berlin wasn’t simply lying dormant: just ten years later in 2000, its success overtook London’s by more than 2:1.

ArtFacts.Net’s Top Data shows that timing and location play a significant role in an artist’s career. While artists showing in London generally rank higher than those showing in Berlin, we now know that the year 2000 was a turning point for Berlin with some of the world’s most influential contemporary artists beginning their careers there.

Go on, ask us anything by simply replying to this e-mail. Our favorite inquiries with answers will be posted in next month’s newsletter.
