Art Berlin was born from a rich and tumultuous visual arts culture in ‘sexy but poor’ Berlin. Art Forum Berlin was the first art fair in the city, established in 1996 as the alternative to Germany’s oldest and grandest art fair, Art Cologne. In 2008 abc art berlin contemporary appeared with a younger and fresher look, running as a side-fair. Art Forum Berlin then disintegrated in 2011 leaving abc as the main event. As abc began to wane and exhibitors and crowds became fewer in number, the Koelnmesse stepped in. Koelnmesse, the company behind Art Cologne, purchased abc in 2017 and have transformed the fair into Art Berlin – sharing their know-how and expertise to cement Art Berlin as an important event in the global art calendar.
At Art Berlin 2018, around 120 galleries from 21 countries offer the international art world a comprehensive overview of contemporary positions while also showcasing works of Classic Modernism. The fair takes place for the first time in two hangars of the historical Tempelhof Airport, since its decommissioning becoming a central Berlin location for a variety of cultural activities.
